February 2018
Greetings Students, Parents and Staff,

It is hard to believe that we are coming up on mid-point of the second semester. Before you know it, the end of the school year will be upon us.
February has been an action-packed month filled with an array of educational experiences. We started the month with a guest speaker from UCLA’s neuroscience lab. Dr. Hagerty delivered a short but informative talk on social media and the brain and the importance of watching out for the amount of time that our kids are spending on the screen. Following in the footsteps of her presentation, one of Dr Hagerty's colleagues, Anna Zitter, will be presenting at career day. For all of our neuroscience students, this should be an exciting treat and will provide them with the rare opportunity to take an up-close look at the human brain. Joining in the career day discussions we are also excited to have an array of dynamic speakers from diverse backgrounds such as Law, Entertainment, and Public Speaking.
For our Seniors and Juniors, February has been a milestone as many of our Seniors have heard back from their top choice colleges, and our Juniors have all on embarked on their college planning preparation. This is an exciting time in their life as they start to dream about their futures and realize the myriad of opportunities ahead of them. One of the key learning moments, from the college planning process, has been that it is never to early to start planning for college. With that in mind, we encourage all of our families to take a look at our college planning tips. Don’t hesitate to schedule a time to talk to the STAR Prep Administration and instructors about planning for your child’s college aspirations. STAR Prep is dedicated to helping every child develop a vision for educational future, and this endeavor is a collaborative journey.
On the Arts scene, the STAR Prep Rock Band rocked downtown LA’s "Night on Broadway" event. Staffed by hundreds of community artists and attended by thousands, "Night on Broadway" provides a fantastic opportunity for the STAR Prep student band to perform for a vast audience and as usual, PREP ROCKED THE STAGE!
Moving forward into March, STAR Prep is headed into one of the busiest seasons of the year. Filled with Leadership events, field trips, family game nights and mid-semester reports there will hardly be a moment to spare. STAR Prep is especially looking forward to hosting the ECC Japanese students for the fourth year in a row. Every year, this week is filled with special learning opportunities that allow students to learn collaboratively with their Japanese peers. To help your student prepare for the international learning experience, we recommend that you take a little time at home to research Japanese culture. For all of those of you that love to tackle a new language learning experience, this is also an excellent chance for you and your student to try and learn a couple of key Japanese phrases.
Last but not least, we are looking forward to the Diavolo Dance and Theatre performance on March 30th. As you know, every year STAR Prep students have the opportunity to sign up for Diavolo’s incredible dance workshop. This challenging experience develops team-work, endurance, agility and performance skills and always proves for an incredible final performance. We look forward to seeing everyone in attendance on March 30th...so mark the date on your calendar!
March 1st is our next parent coffee chat and we are back to the traditional forum where the parents lead the way. We look forward to hearing your ideas and feedback. However, if you have topics that you want to discuss before the 1st, don’t hesitate to stop by the office, give us a call or shoot us an email with any questions you may have. We are here to make sure that you and your student have everything you need to feel supported and successful!
