HIGH SCHOOL FILM PRESENTS
THE APEX TRAILER
APRIL WAS A BEAUTIFUL MONTH
The beginning of April saw 26 of our new Japanese friends heading home after a week of non-stop activities, both at STAR Prep and beyond. “We didn’t have enough time with them!” one student commented as he and his buddy exchanged Instagram accounts to stay connected. “When are we going to Tokyo?” another student asked. Good question! Our partners, ECC, promised to lay some groundwork in Tokyo for a possible student exchange, so who knows? ECC also told us that the STAR Prep tour is the most popular of all their tours throughout the United States. We assumed it was because of Disneyland, but they assured us it was because of the students at STAR Prep!
Along with the flurry of activity with our international visitors, our amazing Diavolo students astonished us with an exhilarating movement creation, and our Theatre players, The Stargazers” shared their self-produced and written play, “L.B.C.P,” reminding us of an episode of Twilight Zone. We all left for Spring Break, giving everyone a chance to catch their breath. The students returned, seemingly eager to plow through the academic challenges presented to them, realizing that the end of the school year was just around the corner.
Westside Health visited the high school students for a morning seminar on health and sexuality with a fact-based approach to a sometimes difficult subject. STAR Prep also hosted an Admissions Director Luncheon this month, giving us a chance to get the word out about STAR Prep to educational professionals who work with families in Los Angeles, helping them find the right school for their child.
The highlight of the month was STAR PREP OLYMPICS! Run by our student leadership, plans were laid out for “Name That Tune” on Monday, “Walter Says” on Tuesday, and “Jeopardy” on Wednesday. The competition was fierce with the four different teams, and throughout the week, each team showed prowess in the varying areas of expertise, whether it was intellectual, physical, or popular knowledge. The Olympics concluded on a rainy Thursday morning at Roxbury Park (that didn’t stop us!) where the students competed in a series of physical challenges, such as Tug of War, Capture the Flag, and Soccer. What a week! All points were collected (thank you Mason!) and the winner of the STAR Prep Olympics was (drum roll) THE PINK TEAM! Thank you leadership, for all your spirit, hard work, and organization!
The concluding event of the month was STAR Prep’s participation in STAR Education’s Children’s Earth Day. Earth Day at the Eco Station has become an extremely popular event by the people of Los Angeles, and it’s a fun and exciting celebration of our Earth and the Earth’s wonderful children. Fun, food, rides, prizes, tours of the Eco Station, and non-stop performances by children assure this to be a beautiful day, and STAR Prep students were the first ones there to get the party started! Actually, STAR Prep chose their Day of Service to be a service day at the Eco Station on the Friday before, and we all showed up to make signs, jewelry, ticket baskets, erect tents, paint skateboards, and anything else that was needed. (They also got to spend “quality time” with their favorite animals….) On the day of the event, many students, even parents, came out to help us market our school and get the word out to families. Our Cos-Play Friday class came out to fashion their costumes, sing karaoke, and pass out brochures. STAR Prep also shared their booth with the “Human Gyroscope” ride and the students mingled with the families that lined up to get tossed and turned. Thanks for your amazing participation, STAR Prep families!

Through the last few years, we felt that we did not give enough attention to actual academic subjects, focusing only on our performance classes, so we plan to go back to the school “fair” model, allowing parents to visit the classrooms, the multi-purpose room for exhibits, and the outside patio for food, performances, and awards for academics and citizenship.
JUNE 5TH: Yearbook signing at the beach. Details TBA
JUNE 8TH: 12th-grade Graduation is planned for June 8th, 5:30 pm at the theatre in the Fine Arts Complex at WLA College. This year, we are planning to include the 8th-grade culmination at the opening reception outside on the lawn previous to the graduation ceremony. All of our STAR Prep community are invited to attend.
